Car waxing before winter or over the course of the year?

In the last post we discussed paintwork decontamination. After that (when the paintwork is pristine clean without any dirt or microparticles) it is important to conserve it. The most effective way to do that is to use any of the car waxes available in the market. FYI, we recommend to use carnauba or synthetic wax (sealant). Both types offer the longest and most effective lifespan and protection. Carnauba (Copernicia Cerifera in latin) is a Brazilian tree leaf extract. It is practically insoluble and has the highest melting temperature (around 82-86 C degrees).

Right before the the wax application we suggest to remove the grease from the surface using so called pre-wax cleaner. It will remove possible old wax layer and will 100% clean it. The surface cleaned this way will cause the wax to attach better to the paintwork and will increase its lifespan. We recommend to apply the wax in two layers. As requested by some clients, we applied 3 or 4 wax layers for better protection. How should you take care of your waxed car? Absolutely by regular washing by pH-neutral shampoo (and you should forget about aggressive pre-cleaners).

A final thought – it is not enough to wax your vehicle only before winter, but over the course of the year. Ideally, 2 or 3 times a year in two layers. During winter it protects the paintwork from ugly weather, aggressive road salt, from springtime to summer from UV rays and aggressive insects and flies.

Why should you deal with paintwork decontamination?

The better you wash your vehicle, the more paintwork flaws you will see. For instance, the better a TV is, the more screen errors will be visible. Contamination is a typical paintwork damage. It is about glued or sticked small particles or microparticles of asphalt, resin, tire parts, brake dust or air rust on the paintwork.

Car cosmetics industry is changing, so it developed contamination remover called clay. It is a special mass resembling plasticine. It is often used with lubricant so the paintwork will not be damaged during the mechanical cleaning. Lubricant is sprayed on the paintwork and then the clay is applied in horizontal or vertical movements. If there is a major contamination it is necessary to invert the clay frequently, so the glued contaminants will not scratch the surface. We recommend to wash the vehicle one more time and conserve it with wax!

Sometimes we come across a new vehicle assigned for showroom that is also contaminated. It happens during the camion or train and sometimes even when the car is not waxed for a long time. When you do not deal with the contamination properly or frequently the small contaminants can create small local corrosion (see image bellow) which can be seen especially on white or light surface. They can be spotted on the down side of the front door when they are caught from the wheels. Another frequent part is back of the vehicle on the luggage compartment near vehicle´s license plate.

By paintwork decontamination you higher the quality of the surface and it´s look. It is a professional operation, so contact us for advice or use our services in KV Detail.

On the present time there are liquid contamination removers under development (without the necessity of plasticine).
